I Have This Feeling A Lot of Dance Looks Like Something Else
Dance, expression without language, has long been the heartbeat of queer spaces. Yet, in a culture based on movement, the trans-masculine identity: broad, difficult to categorise, and caught between communities, can fall through the cracks within a society where our movement styles are policed by gender.
Paralysed by external expectation, it can be easy to forget how to express yourself when you are caught up in proving who you are. This body of work uses hand drawn moving image to look at our relationship with the body, expand traditional definitions of dance and explore the origins of movement based discomfort. Built from a collection of personal accounts, confessions and stories from the community, it is supported by large art installations, which scale up an underrepresented lived experience and give it the space it needs to breathe.
