Beatrice Bufftail Finds Her Dance
For my final project, I explored how autistic children often feel excluded. These children blame this on how they perceive themselves as different from their peers. This could be academic or motor difficulties, or even the sound of the child's voice. Growing up, I faced these worries about belonging, and now I feel it is important to show these stories through an autistic perspective.
The book ‘Beatrice Bufftail Finds Her Dance’ follows a bee who is unable to dance as well as the other bees in her hive. The title character eventually leaves home and finds belonging, similar to many autistic people who find belonging after finding communities that accept their differences. I designed this narrative to give hope to children who feel left out, but I would also like parents to question why Beatrice had to leave home and advocate for their child's inclusion within education.
