Your Gaze Hits the Side of My Face: Analysing the Male Gaze and the Modern Girl with Particular Reference to the Work of Sofia Coppola
The male gaze, looking, seeing, and viewing. Observing others and ourselves are universal aspects of life. This can be perfectly reflected in cinema, my research analyses this with a particular focus on how we view through the different lenses.
The camera, the mirror and the eye all encompass the foundation of my research as well as the reconstruction of the male gaze. Further drawing from theorists such as John Berger, Laura Mulvey and Jacques Lacan, and artists such as Laura Greenfield, Petra Collins, Sofia Coppola, Eimear Lynch, Coralie Fargeat, and Maya Deren.
Aoife Walsh is a final year visual culture student, much of her research focuses on cinema and the male/female gaze. Before coming to NCAD, Aoife studied at Maynooth University, gaining a Bachelor of Civil Law. This has carried over into her studies at NCAD, particularly with the topic of art and activism.
