Face Yourself
'Face Yourself' is a creative workshop designed to open up conversations about facial differences among young people in Ireland. Inspired by my own childhood—having been born with a cleft lip—I wanted to raise awareness of how visible differences can shape self-image and confidence. In speaking with others from the cleft community, it became clear that many felt their condition was treated as a taboo—often avoided in conversation—while still facing judgement in everyday life. The shared message was consistent: greater awareness leads to greater understanding.
The workshop was piloted with 27 children aged 10–12, a key age when identity and self-image begin to solidify. By encouraging reflection through creativity, it helps challenge narrow beauty standards and promote empathy. Aligned with the NCCA Primary Arts Education Specification, the Wellbeing Curriculum, and the Bí Cineálta (Be Kind) 2027 initiative, the workshop includes a full facilitator’s toolkit to support inclusive, meaningful learning.
