The Sentient Shell
Charlotte Oppermann is a multidisciplinary artist and sculpture student. She is currently focusing her practice on facets of hyper feminine identity through the viewpoint of her personal experience. Through her making and performance she is particularly interested in uncovering the humanity within the 'artifice' and examining the voyeuristic lens through which hyper-feminine or 'camp' individuals are often viewed.
Drawing inspiration from the characters, luscious material language and grandeur of classic cinema and cabaret, she embraces the gaudy and ornate. She celebrates bold colours, waggish glamour, rhinestones, and extravagant forms of expression. In her work, she has employed the metaphor of the shell, an object both protective and ornamental, seen as something to be cracked open; she uses fringe and sheer fabrics to give an illusion of privacy in these vulnerable entities.
