The Morning Thrush
This work takes its title from a tune composed by uilleann piper James Ennis in 1904. The piece consists of a series of long woollen strips denoting a musical stave. This is overhung with hanging or floating objects representing musical notes. The colour palette is linked to the seven notes of the musical scale.
The work relates to the history of traditional Irish music in Thomas Street and in the surrounding Liberties of Dublin. It honours the textile makers from the Liberties who rescued a musical tradition from extinction. I work with textiles, weaving with pure Donegal wool. For the musical accessories, I stitch into found objects and remnants.
My research includes searches of musical and family archives. I am inspired by artists who honour sound and memory in textiles and in music. I hope to work with the community and to incorporate a lifelong love of music
