The Genetrix
'The Genetrix', or mother—the source of life—is a response to fears surrounding pregnancy, bioethics, and reproduction as measures of worth under the pressure of our androcentric society. Through a focus on the pig farming industry and its oppressive, enclosed breeding spaces, comparisons are drawn to female-oriented hospital wards and the gynaecological pathologies that weigh down female lives, their loves, hopes, and desires.
This work explores dystopian fears grounded in reality for those born with a uterus: the loss of bodily autonomy and being subjected to becoming a producer used for its biology, like the humble pig.
Movement is power, and the motif of the kept animal serves as a fitting metaphor for the socialised human experience under patriarchy. The Genetrix seeks to position the viewer both as voyeur and the viewed, entertaining the possibility that one is never free from external perceptions.
