Between Two Worlds: Belonging To Neither
“Where am I from?”
“Where do I belong?”
“Do I belong here?”
These questions weigh heavily on the identity of second-generation immigrants, shaping how they navigate culture, self-perception, and community. 'Belonging' is a staple aspect of an individual’s life.
In this project, typography is used to demonstrate the obscurity and confusion around certain questions – such as “Where are you from from?”, as seen from the perspective of a second generation immigrant. Different perspectives stemming from individual backgrounds, ethnicities, and life experiences have been and will continue to be explored through a mark-making workshop. The craft techniques in the workshop are aimed to prompt a deeper reflection through a visual language that spoken language does not reach.
The purpose of this project is to use communication design to showcase the struggles of belonging, particularly for young adults, and that belonging is viewed through more than just one lens.
