Between Making and Meaning: Navigating the Artist-Educator Identity
As an artist-educator completing the Professional Master of Education, my practice explores the dynamic interplay between artistic inquiry and pedagogical responsibility. Rooted in both critical reflection and material exploration, my work examines the tensions between creating and teaching, drawing on lived experience and a/r/tographic methodology.
Through sculptural ceramics—particularly smoke-fired forms—and observational drawing, I investigate the rhythms of nature and how these can scaffold student learning. My research includes autoethnographic writing, classroom-based action research, and interviews with educators across stages of their careers. This multifaceted approach highlights the complexity of maintaining an evolving artistic identity within the structures of formal education.
My practice is both studio-based and classroom-informed, striving to blur boundaries between making and teaching, theory and practice. This body of work seeks to affirm that teaching and artistic practice are not opposing forces, but interwoven aspects of a meaningful, critically engaged creative life.
