Reclaiming The Divide: Placemaking and Vernacular Art on Bere Island
This project focuses on reconnecting overlooked parts of Bere Island through a site-specific artwork responding to its military history and surroundings. Installed outdoors, the piece is designed to encourage walking and exploration in remote areas of the island historically cut off by military boundaries. By working with local artists, residents, and community groups, the project supports broader conversations about public access, creative reuse, and the layered history of these spaces.
First engaging the landscape outside, military sites, the work serves as a case study in how artistic interventions might activate the wider landscape and create new ways for people to engage with it. This initial phase is supported by participation in the Bere Island Arts Festival in September and begins a longer process toward future use of the disused batteries. It aims to reconnect these sites with the island’s present and invite new ways of inhabiting and interpreting the landscape.
