Bent Over Backward
My work explores the complex relationship we all have with femininity, focusing on the societal expectations that shape how we view ourselves and others. Through sculpture and mixed media, I challenge gendered norms that pressure individuals—particularly women—to conform to unattainable ideals. Drawing inspiration from feminism, women’s history, and the natural world, my practice is grounded in material experimentation and emotional honesty. I work intuitively with clay, plaster, and found objects, allowing process and concept to evolve together.
Much of my research looks at the legacy of patriarchal structures in Irish society and how media-driven ideals continue to impact young women’s self-image. My work seeks to expose how these expectations can lead to shame, social exclusion, and poor mental health. By creating space for reflection and dialogue, I hope to encourage viewers to question these norms and engage in deeper conversations around authenticity, around gender, identity, and personal growth.
