Supporting Carers in the Emergency Management of Seizures
I work as a hospital pharmacist with a special interest in medication safety. This work explored how the methods and tools of service design could be applied to see how might we as pharmacists better support carers in the emergency management of seizures. The research methods used include ethnographic interviews with carers, carer journey mapping, empathy mapping and usability testing to understand the lived carer experience. Interviews were also done with other key stakeholders including doctors, specialist nurses and pharmacists.
A key finding was that expiry date management of the medication used in the emergency management of seizures is difficult for both patients and carers. It is difficult because it is unpredictable and there may be several dates to simultaneously keep track of. This project has explored how to connect this important piece of information with the end user through the development of automated text messages from community pharmacies.
