Mia Bellew
I have something to say and I would like you to listen to it.
Mia Bellew is a queer visual artist whose work blends intentional obscurity and an aesthetic of tackiness with strong emotional themes.
Mia experiments with audio, visual, and sculptural elements, weaving together curated online footage, personal home videos, and self-captured moments. Through a kitsch narrative, she explores the complexities of navigating the digital realm as a young woman, grappling with the balance between vulnerability and the facade of strength. Her work delves into lived experiences, serving as a reflection of her identity, queerness, and pop culture.
Mia’s degree show is based on a personal experience in her hometown, sparking a deeper reflection on capitalism, exploitation and sensationalism. It challenges society’s tendency to position queer individuals as symbols of suffering while ignoring their autonomy.
Using humour as a reflective tool, she blends comedy and serious themes to create a space for reflection, healing, and using it to explore how art, as well as personal stories, can be both commodified and marketed.
Mia intends on creating a multifaceted paradox, combining her experiences with a deeper commentary on art commodification itself.
