Stitch in Time
Dressmaking is an act of storytelling through clothing, each seam and pattern uniquely constructed based on not only individual measurements but also personal identity. Unfortunately, the human appreciation of craftsmanship is under threat by industrialisation as it replaces societal norms towards quantity over quality. This project aims to encapsulate dressmakers by introducing the production and highlighting stories.
Through interviewing Latvian dressmakers with mixed experiences, all shared a struggle for the availability of clothing during the Soviet Union. As a response, the archive supports by sharing the stories and how dressmaking was perceived to be important in society. Stitches layered on texts, enables the reader to unveil messages, which re-enacts restricted media during the USSR.
When observing our wardrobe, you can only see what you understand but recognising the structure reveals the seams that go unnoticed. The video is a corresponding representation of what hides behind the construction of clothing.
