Made Visible: A Conversation on Hidden Disabilities
In this work, I explore what is often overlooked or dismissed in our world- hidden disabilities. I approached this from the vantage point of my own condition: Multiple Sclerosis, often referred to as the “Snowflake Disease.” My intention was to open up a conversation around the everyday lived experiences of these conditions.
The first part of the work was generated from first-hand knowledge of the physical experience. Using ink, drawing tools, and thread woven into fragile papers, I created drawings that were then damaged and reconstructed, reflecting the fragmented and fluctuating nature of the illness. A moving image component conveys a more visceral sense of this perspective. The snowflake sculpture- made from over 10,000 pieces of tissue- represents the uniqueness of each person’s experience with MS.
The second part of the project was developed in collaboration with MS Ireland. Through a workshop, participants were invited to try an MS simulation kit. Their feedback and experiences informed a second video piece, expanding the conversation beyond the personal to include a wider community of voices.
