Goes to bed in a state, caused by the state
'He goes to bed in a state, caused by the state' is a project grounded in text, observation, and the power of simple language. Inspired by the life of my grandmother, who grew up in the open tenements of 1940s Dublin and later lived in the Fatima Mansions before they fell into disrepair, this work reflects on societal change, memory, and resilience.
Through it, I explore themes of social change, the shifting landscape of the city, and the complex pull of nostalgia. With unflinching honesty, I confront the realities of drug abuse and alcoholism, considering how and why these struggles persist across generations.
This piece is an invitation, to reflect, to feel, to dream. Hand-embroidered over four months and more than 300 hours, it stands as a tribute to those who have lost their lives to addiction—a quiet act of remembrance and resistance.
