By Way of Neither
Susie Miller is a Dublin-based artist whose expanded practice examines the forms of alienation and dissonance within Irish culture through image manipulation, moving image, and installation.
In 'By Way of Neither', ancient alien symbols provide a framework in which to examine everyday systems of ritual and movement, and how their repetitive logic mirrors deeper existential patterns.
Her work explores tensions of direction and meaning through the recontextualising of familiar infrastructures, in an attempt to expose their quiet strangeness. Focusing on the overlooked space of the suburban roundabout, the work serves as a meditative reflection on navigation within a hyper-structured culture and environment, utilising functional materials and, in turn, focusing on the compartmentalisation of information.
Influenced by the absurdist narratives found in the writings of Samuel Beckett, Miller’s work investigates how different systems shape and reflect the human need for purpose and the space for this within the ritual of everyday.
